Roger Ebert will never write a review again, but his comment reminds us that the legacy of the man who dedicated 46 years to professionally writing about film will never go away. Just as his writing allowed his voice to live on after he lost it due to jawbone cancer in , so too will it allow him to live on now. Many people justifiably claim that there are more important film critics — those who developed their field in its early stages. It made Roger more than someone I read and turned him into someone I grew up with. And while I may have taken part internally in larger intellectual debates with other film scholars, no one else ever made me love film in the same way.

17 Straight Actors Who Were Praised for Playing LGBTQ Characters
Ron Woodroof was a real guy, a bull-riding, drug-snorting, womanizing bastard whose ignorance and reckless sexual behavior left him HIV-positive at the height of the AIDS crisis. Given 30 days to live by the hospital, he sought a cure in the drugs that could only be found south of the border. When some of those meds actually proved effective, he saw an opportunity to make some cash and started smuggling them north, where he set up a buyers club. Not exactly plugged into the gay community, Woodroof recruits a transsexual named Rayon to help find consumers, and their odd-couple relationship is the heart of the film. If there was any doubt that McConaughey is more than just a tawny-chested rom-com stud, there should be no question anymore. Leto, too, uses the role to remake his career, one that had withered and been sidetracked by the demands of a successful music career. Dallas Buyers Club opened Nov.

The Hangover 2: The Reviews Are In
Mathew Rodriguez firmly believes Blake Lively should be an Oscar nominee for playing a dom queer woman with a penchant for ice-cold martinis, three-piece tuxedos and leaving her kid for weeks in the hands of a perky Anna Kendrick. He is, of course, talking about the deeply underrated and subversive queer film A Simple Favor. Now available on Hulu and Prime Video, A Simple Favor is getting its due — two years too late — thanks to a dearth of new programming and a need to mentally escape this pandemic. The film follows Anna Kendrick, in her most Kendrick-esque role, as Stephanie Smothers, a plucky, single mommy blogger who investigates the disappearance of a new friend. Tickets: link in bio.

For that reason it remains one of a kind and — somehow — underrated. The synopsis is simple: Two twangy Wyoming ranchers take a break from herding sheep to realize they're living a lie. The movie follows Jack and Ennis' agonizing attempts to maintain quaint home lives as they reconcile what their Brokeback experience meant and means.
